Why the New NCERT Maths Books Focus on Thinking, Not Just Formulas

From "How to Solve" to "Why It Works"

For years, many students learned mathematics as a set of procedures: memorise the formula, recognise the question type, apply the steps. It worked for routine exams but often left students stuck when a question looked even slightly unfamiliar. The new NCERT books — Ganita Prakash for Classes 6 to 8 and Ganita Manjari for Class 9 — deliberately shift the focus from "how to solve" to "why it works".

What "Thinking First" Looks Like in the Books

Chapters often begin with a puzzle, a pattern or a question for students to explore before any rule is stated. In "Patterns in Mathematics" (Class 6), children look for patterns in number sequences and shapes. In "Algebra Play" (Class 8), algebra is used to explain why certain number tricks always work. In "Propositions and their Converses" (Class 9), students learn to ask whether a statement remains true when it is reversed. Formulas still appear — but they arrive as the result of reasoning, not as a starting point.

Why NCERT Made This Change

NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 emphasise conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem-solving and reduced rote learning. There is also a practical reason: competency-based questions are becoming more common in school and board exams, and these test whether a student can apply an idea in a new context. A student who understands why a method works can adapt it; a student who has only memorised the steps cannot.

Does This Make Maths Harder?

At first, it can feel harder, because students are asked to explain rather than just compute. In the long run, it usually makes mathematics easier, because ideas connect to one another and fewer facts need to be memorised in isolation. A child who truly understands why the area of a rectangle is length times breadth will find the area of a triangle, a parallelogram and a trapezium much easier to remember.

How Students Can Adapt

Read slowly and do the activities rather than skipping to the questions. Talk through your reasoning aloud or write it in one or two sentences. When you get a question wrong, look for the step where your thinking went off course, not just the correct final answer. Try to find a second method for questions you have already solved. And when you check solutions, choose a resource that explains the reasoning behind each step.

Solutions That Explain the "Why"

Om Muruga Publication's NCERT solution books for Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari are written in exactly this spirit. Every solution shows the full working with explanations of each step, so students learn the reasoning, not just the answer.
