Ganita Prakash & Ganita Manjari Explained: The New CBSE Maths Syllabus for Classes 6 to 9
What Do the Names Mean?
"Ganita" is the Sanskrit word for mathematics. "Prakash" means light, so Ganita Prakash can be read as "the light of mathematics". "Manjari" refers to a cluster of blossoms, suggesting that Class 9 is where the seeds planted in the middle school years begin to flower. The names are deliberate: they signal that NCERT wants children to see mathematics as something that illuminates and grows, rather than a list of formulas to memorise.
Ganita Prakash is the Maths textbook for Classes 6, 7 and 8. Ganita Manjari is the new Maths textbook for Class 9. Together they form one continuous curriculum for the middle and early secondary stage.
Why NCERT Replaced the Old Maths Books
The old NCERT Maths books served students for nearly two decades. The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, based on NEP 2020, asked for textbooks that reduce rote learning, build conceptual understanding, connect mathematics to real life and to India's own mathematical heritage, and develop problem-solving and reasoning. Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari are NCERT's answer to that brief.
How Ganita Prakash Is Organised
Class 6 has a single volume of ten chapters. Classes 7 and 8 each have two volumes — Part 1 and Part 2 — with chapter numbering restarting at 1 in Part 2. Class 7 has fifteen chapters in total (8 + 7) and Class 8 has fourteen (7 + 7).
Every chapter is built around short sections followed by "Figure it Out" question sets, rather than one long exercise at the end. Many chapters open with a story, a puzzle or a conversation between children, and important ideas are often discovered through activities before they are stated formally. Chapters such as "Number Play" appear in Classes 6, 7 and 8, each time at a higher level, so that number sense keeps growing year after year.
How Ganita Manjari Is Organised
Ganita Manjari for Class 9 marks a clear step up. Part 1 has eight chapters and Part 2 continues from Chapter 9. Compared with the old Class 9 book, it brings in new areas such as probability ("The Mathematics of Maybe"), sequences and progressions ("Predicting What Comes Next"), logic ("Propositions and their Converses") and even algorithms ("The World of Algorithms"). Coordinates come first, setting up the graphical thinking used later in the book.

| 6 | Measuring Space: Perimeter and Area |
| 7 | The Mathematics of Maybe: Introduction to Probability |
| 8 | Predicting What Comes Next: Exploring Sequences and Progressions |
| Ch. | Chapter Name |
|---|---|
| 9 | Propositions and their Converses |
| 10 | How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data |
| 11 | The World of Algorithms |

| 14 | Math of Space: Surface Area and Volume |
Indian Mathematics Woven into the Books
One of the most noticeable features of both books is the attention given to India's mathematical tradition. Class 8 includes a full chapter titled "The Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem", and "A Story of Numbers" traces how number systems developed. Students meet ideas and names from Indian mathematical history alongside the standard content, which helps them see mathematics as part of their own cultural heritage rather than something borrowed from elsewhere.
What This Means for Students
Students can no longer prepare by memorising solved examples and repeating them in the exam. The new books ask "why" and "how do you know" much more often. The best preparation is to work through every Figure it Out question honestly, then compare your method with a reliable solution, paying attention to the reasoning at each step. When students understand why a method works, they can handle unfamiliar questions with confidence.
