5 Big Changes in the CBSE Maths Syllabus Every Parent Should Know
Change 1: Completely New Textbooks
Classes 6, 7 and 8 now study from Ganita Prakash, and Class 9 studies from Ganita Manjari. These are not revised editions of the old books — they are entirely new textbooks written under NCF-SE 2023. Old guides, solution books and question banks written for the previous textbooks will not match the new chapters, so make sure any study material you buy is written for the new books.
Change 2: Two Books per Year in Classes 7, 8 and 9
Class 6 has one volume, but Classes 7 and 8 each have Part 1 and Part 2, and Class 9 Ganita Manjari is also published in parts. In Classes 7 and 8, chapter numbering restarts at 1 in Part 2, so "Chapter 3" can mean two different chapters. When your child mentions a chapter number, always check which part they mean.
Change 3: New Chapter Names for Familiar Topics
Topics have been renamed and reorganised. Exponents are now "Power Play", percentages are in "Fractions in Disguise", congruence is "Geometric Twins", simple equations are "Finding the Unknown", and circles in Class 9 are "I'm Up and Down, and Round and Round". Knowing these equivalents helps you follow what your child is studying.
Change 4: New Topics in Class 9
Class 9 now includes probability, sequences and progressions (arithmetic and geometric), logical propositions and their converses, and an introduction to algorithms. Some of these were previously met only in Class 10 or later, or not at all. This means Class 9 deserves serious attention from the start of the year — it is a genuine foundation for Class 10 boards.
| Ch. | Chapter Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates |
| 2 | Introduction to Linear Polynomials |
| 3 | The World of Numbers |
| 4 | Exploring Algebraic Identities |
| 5 | I'm Up and Down, and Round and Round |
| 6 | Measuring Space: Perimeter and Area |
| 7 | The Mathematics of Maybe: Introduction to Probability |
| 8 | Predicting What Comes Next: Exploring Sequences and Progressions |
Change 5: Reasoning Over Rote Learning
The new books ask students to explore, explain and justify. Practice is spread through each chapter in "Figure it Out" sets, and many questions have more than one valid approach. Exams are steadily moving towards competency-based questions. Children who only memorise solved examples will find this difficult; children who practise explaining their thinking will do well.
What Parents Can Do Now
Confirm which book and which part your child is currently using. Replace outdated guides with material written for Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari. Encourage your child to attempt every question independently first, then check with a reliable step-by-step solution. And keep the conversation positive — the new approach is designed to make children enjoy mathematics more, not less.
