Your Child's New Maths Textbook Looks Different: Here's What Ganita Prakash and Ganita Manjari Teach

"This Doesn't Look Like My Maths Book!"

If you have opened your child's Maths textbook recently and felt a little lost, you are not alone. The chapter titles sound like storybook chapters — "Prime Time", "The Other Side of Zero", "Geometric Twins", "The Mathematics of Maybe". There are conversations between characters, puzzles, games and questions that seem to have more than one answer. This is the new NCERT Maths curriculum, and it is very different from the books most parents studied from.

The good news is that the mathematics inside is solid, and in many ways richer than before. This guide explains in plain language what your child is learning and how you can support them at home.

The Names, Decoded

Classes 6, 7 and 8 use Ganita Prakash ("light of mathematics"). Class 6 has one book; Classes 7 and 8 have two books each, Part 1 and Part 2. Class 9 uses Ganita Manjari. Behind the creative titles are familiar topics: "Prime Time" is factors and primes, "The Other Side of Zero" is negative numbers, "Geometric Twins" is congruence, "Power Play" is exponents, "Fractions in Disguise" is percentages, and "The Mathematics of Maybe" is probability.

What Your Child Learns, Class by Class

Class 6 builds the foundation — patterns, lines and angles, number play, data handling, primes, perimeter and area, fractions, constructions, symmetry and integers. Class 7 extends this to large numbers, arithmetic expressions, decimals, the beginnings of algebra, parallel lines, triangles, fractions, congruence, integer operations, constructions and simple equations. Class 8 covers squares and cubes, exponents, the history of numbers, quadrilaterals, algebraic multiplication, proportional reasoning, percentages, the Baudhayana-Pythagoras theorem and area. Class 9 covers coordinates, polynomials, the number system, algebraic identities, circles, area, probability, sequences and more.

Why the Book Asks So Many "Why" Questions

The new books want children to understand, not just to calculate. Instead of giving a formula and ten sums to practise it, a chapter will often let the child discover the pattern first, then explain it. This builds stronger long-term understanding and better problem-solving, which matters for board exams, competitive exams and everyday life. It can feel slower at first, but children who learn this way usually remember far more.

Five Simple Ways to Help at Home

1. Ask your child to teach you one question from today's lesson — explaining is the best test of understanding. 2. Encourage them to attempt every "Figure it Out" question before checking any answer. 3. Notice maths in daily life — discounts while shopping, distances on a trip, sharing food equally — and talk about it. 4. Do not panic when there are multiple ways to solve a question; that is the point. 5. Keep a reliable solution guide at home so your child can check their steps independently when you are not sure yourself.
